Production pieces will have some darker shading on the body. This will be the first production piece that is cast in colored slip! First production firing pieces are marked with a star on the belly. The piece pictured is a test. Actual production pieces have been changed to be a dark shaded bay, more typical of an actual bay Dales pony.

Although one would expect that a piece cast in colored slip would not have much variation, surprise! There are some pieces that have come out with a swirly sort of pattern in the coat.

Six horses were made without black shading, to try out the color of the first batch and shading, and they will be the first variation, none of these were shipped. The second variation "swirly with black" had six total horses, one of which was given to Joan's mom and five were shipped. Recipients who received a first firing model AND a purple letter in the box... got a "swirly with black" variant.

Hadrian's name was first inspired by an article on a brief history of lead mining in the Yorkshire Dales and of course, by the well-known historical landmark, Hadrian's Wall.
