8. How do I tell a custom from a factory production piece or test?
- With very few exceptions
(early pieces), they are marked as "custom" and signed by the artist, Joan
Berkwitz or in some cases, Kristina Lucas. (Kristina usually signed with "Lucas
Studio".) This marking may be found on the belly of the horse. Custom pieces are NOT
considered to be either tests or factory run pieces. They should be exhibited and judged
only in the custom division of any show. It is the responsibility of the owner to place
them in the proper division.
- Other artists have also
done custom glaze pieces, at the pottery and on their own. These are usually signed with
the artist's name or studio name and again, are not considered factory production finish
pieces and should be exhibited only as custom.
- Tests have always been
marked "Test" on the belly, with very few exceptions. The number of tests in
public hands is limited as they are not generally sold by the pottery.
