Jamboree Benefit 3-Day Custom Glaze Workshop
January 18-20, 2003 - Yucaipa, California

Take me straight to the shiny ponies!

Joanie gave this seminar, hosted at Sheryl Leisure's house and workshop. I think everyone had a really swell time! This seminar generated money to help defray the costs of Jamboree, and best of all, shiny ponies were produced!

Day 1 - Masking (47 KB) After lunch (provided by Sheryl), everyone got started making their designs on their horses. There were ten Boxing Shires, and one Okie. We picked a name out of a bowl and Celeste Plitz (from Phoenix area) got to have the Okie!!

Joanie gave instructions on how to plan where the white markings (pinto patterns, face markings, leg markings) go, as well as whether the mane or tail would need to be masked. After that, everyone got to work.

Here is Margaret, carefully planning her markings.

Here is Joanie airbrushing the body coat on somebody's horse. One can see the yellow color of the latex mask. After Joanie painted it, the seminar attendees carefully pulled the latex off and prepared the bisques for another bisque firing.

For dinner, we all piled into a tasty authentic Yucaipa Mexican restaurant! (If you've eaten out in Yucaipa, it was probably there.) It was great fun.

Day 1 - Joanie painting (46 KB)
Day 2 - Out of the Kiln (58 KB)
That night (at 3:30am), when the kiln was almost done firing, there was a power outage!!!!! Luckily, it just meant that the paint wasn't as stuck to the bisque as it could've been. This actually made it easier for some people to dapple or roan.

Heather made us a tasty breakfast consisting of sausages, potatoes, toast, and some of Sheryl's chickens' eggs. MMMMM! Yummy!

The horses got their final airbrushing—mostly hooves and pink on the nose. Cute! Addi also helped people with their dappling and ticking techniques. (Say that three times fast!)

Lunch was another fine meal cooked up by Heather— barbecue sandwiches with beans and cole slaw and guacamole and chips.... it's hard not to be in a good mood when good food is around.

Day 2 - Final Touches (18 KB)
Day 2 - Glaze Coated (59 KB) After lunch, most people were moving on to glaze-coating their horses. Unlike the previous Jamboree seminar where the glaze had to be airbrushed on, the paint was stable enough (it had mostly been bisqued already) that the seminarees could CAREFULLY put on three layers of glaze themselves.

Everyone had lots of energy, as chocolates from around the country had been donated. The furthest came from Maine, where Linda Dean traveled from. (They were chocolate shaped lobsters.)

Here they are, all coated and in the kiln. They're very pink! (Like wrapped little presents.)

Addi decided to add a glazed Albany Donkey that she had repainted. The kiln was pretty full!

We turned the kiln on, then headed in for dinner, where (you guessed it) Heather made us a tasty spaghetti dinner. After dinner, we split into two teams for a trivia game which Addi devised. "Personal Gossip" was the favorite category—I'm not sure why. :-)

Day 2 - Back Into The Kiln (64 KB)
Day 3 - Shiny Ponies Out of the Kiln (63 KB)

Here are the shiny horses everyone has been waiting for! They all turned out fabulously, and there were no casualties!!!

Huzzah!!!
