Fall 1999
The Jamboree Summer Challenge Live Show, held each year at the West Coast Model Horse Collectors Jamboree, is always a huge and competitive show. In 1998, JSC was held concurrently with the North American Nationals show. With NAN attracting an even wider audience from the East, the JSC competition was fiercer than usual. Pour Horse Pottery sponsored the China/Resin division of JSC, donating Hoscar trophies to overall Champions and Reserves, as well as special ponies head pins to all first and second place entries. Everyone coveted these prizes, and due to the large classes and incredible models, they were quite hard to come by! Pour Horse also sponsored some unique collectors' classes with trophies, gift certificates, and pins. The Lucas Studio Challenge class, judged by Kristina Lucas herself, was for customized Pour Horse or Lucas Studio ceramic and resin models. There were gorgeous entries in both media; many finished by their owners. First place went to Molly B, a medium gray Limerick, custom glazed by Joan Berkwitz and owned by Liz Holm. Passionate collectors flocked to the Pour Horse Collector's class, bringing many treasures out just for the occasion. There were five entries, each with an incredible degree of collectibility. Where else could you see, in person, a disaster Owynn (overfired to a crisp), two Jamboree Saucys, a rose gray test Maggie, a factory second Saucy, Knuts galore, test bay and gray Limericks, numerous bisques, variations on every mold, and not one but two dun Baldricks? Pour Horse miscellany were well-represented, too, with pins, bat and bear ornaments, t-shirts, and even Pour Horse Patter. Each collection was well documented and beautifully presented. Joan Berkwitz judged the class, and no one envied her that job. When the dust settled, the winner was Trep Parrish. Trep's collection featured rare OFs, bisques, variations, and test colors. She also included the Friesian resin, cast by Pour Horse, which provided the initial financing for producing ceramics. It was a privilege to see all these wonderful models which would only be risked in public for an event as special as this one! Credits: article by Liz Holm
