This handsome bay mini Boxing Shire
was an experiment for Joanie to see if she could replicate the nostalgic
style of Hagen Renaker paint jobs - specifically the use of white on his
legs and his blaze - which captures the exquisite facial detail in this horse
sculpted by the talented Donna Chaney. In addition, this is the first casting of the new base - still 100% glaze fired, but now with more detail and excitement. He was cast in colored slip as vintage HRs were. Joan then sprayed his legs and face white, then sprayed layers of body color over the top. His mane and tail are hand-painted, as are his ear tips and leg chestnuts, going far beyond the HR factory finishes. He will make a fine addition to someone's collection, especially rare because Joan does not typically release her tests for sale. This one, though, was just too handsome to live his life off of the show table. He is clearly marked on his underside as a Pour Horse Pottery Test, produced in 2004. |
