  Introduction to the Pottery

Pour Horse Pottery is a factory that since 1995 has created beautiful ceramic horse sculptures and related items. It is owned and operated by the sole factory employee, Joan Berkwitz of Carlsbad, California (pictured with Trep Parish), who paints and glazes all of the original finish figurines. To date, Kristina Lucas-Francis has sculpted most of the pieces from the Pottery.

  Inspiration

Joan was inspired by a great California potter of the same genre, Hagen-Renaker. The principle sculptors of H-R, Maureen Love, and Helen Farnlund, are pictured right outside the South Coast Classic venue. Both ladies attended as guests of Joan.

  Pour Horse Pottery Pieces

Pour Horse Pottery pieces sculpted by Kristina include: Saucy (Suffolk mare), Limerick (Cob horse), Owynn (Welsh stallion), Bressay (Shetland mare), Worth the Wait (Stock mare), Maggie (Eriskay mare), Collier (Belgian), Nomad (Tarpan), the Hoscars, and the Clydesdale, Jamboree, and Mule pins. Pour Horse also produced the Ren Faire pins (sculpted by Joan) and a shaggy pony pin (sculpted by Addi Velasquez). Pictured above are several OF and custom "Owynn" and "Saucy" sculptures.

  Lucas-Francis Studio

Lucas-Francis Studio is the operational name of the design studio of Kristina Lucas-Francis. Under this name, Kristina releases ceramic items glazed and fired at the Pottery. These pieces include: Voltage (warmblood mare); Spark Gap (STB gelding); Kulfi (Mariwari pony); Sia (Arabian filly); Knut (Fjord stallion); Orson (Cleveland Bay stallion); and Tesla (Draft filly); decorative Fruit Bat and Polar Bear ornaments and Horse skull pin. Pictured below are "Voltage" customs, collaborations between Joan and Kristina.

Other Lines Produced by the Pottery

Other artists, such as Tom Bainbridge, and Lesli Kathman contract with Joan to produce pieces with the use of the Pottery kiln and Joan's painting talent; although not considered Pour Horse Pottery pieces. These lines provide both income and diversity. Pictured left is a resin copy of head sculpted and sold by Laurie Jo Jensen, that was later produced in china by the Pottery.

  Original Finish vs. Custom Pieces

An "original finish" piece is one that is made by the Pottery as part of a regular or limited edition production release. A "test" piece is a fairly unique sculpture used to determine what colors the factory would use in its regular production line, and is considered "original finish." A "custom glaze" piece is a ceramic Pottery body that has been painted and glazed to be unique, but has never been considered for introduction into the regular production line.

A "claybody custom" is a ceramic Pottery body that has been modified in shape, painted and glazed to be unique, but never considered for the regular production line. A "cold custom" is a bisque body painted "cold" (not fired) in acrylics or oil. Pieces designated by the Pottery or Lucas-Francis Studio as "custom" may not be exhibited by collectors as "original finish" pieces or in collectors' classes. Pictured above: custom "Kulfis" at left; custom "Kheer" sculptures at right.

  Scales, Schedules, and Sales

Thumb-scale pieces are the Pour Horse equivalent of Breyer Stablemates or H-R minis. Curio-scale pieces are the Pour Horse equivalent of Breyer Classic pieces or most of the H-R DW line. Historically, the Pottery has released a new sculpture every six months, varying between "thumb" and "curio" scales. In order to buy most items, you must be on the customer list. The list is closed, but there is a short waiting list. Pins are offered to the general public. To see the now-available items from the Pottery, go to its official website. Items at this site are not for sale.
