Artist Series Horses - To Be Constructed |
 |
|
|
On occassion, Joanie would get together with another artist to produce for
them a short run of ceramic pieces. These are not Pour Horses, although they
were usually cast, cleaned, painted, and fired by Joan at the pottery.
The degree of artist involvement with the piece varied considerably - sometimes
the sculpting and commissioning artist would be at the factory to paint,
and sometimes they would only receive the finished product. Joan had no control
over how these pieces were sold or distributed (a benchmark for determining
if they were pottery pieces or not), although she often received a number
of the pieces for herself (to disperse as she saw fit).
This page is slated for future construction, and if you have any brilliant
ideas of what you'd like to see incorporated, send Tara an email.
The current thought is that there will be a separate page for each of the
pieces produced, with lots of pictures and information about them (similar
to the OF pages).
By all means, if you have pictures of any horses that qualify, send them to Tara, and they may make their way up onto the site.
For now, content yourself with these few pictures:

Joanie writes of this horse:
The Worth the Wait is very special to me, her name is Karma. She was claybodied
by Sarah Minkiewicz-Breunig when she came to work on the Excalibur run. Sarah
resculpted the horse quite a bit, and added very “Sarah” details like a pooky
lip and swirly mane and tail. She is actually the color test for the Excalibur
run, so she has quite a few things in her favor! My collection.
This is a color test for Sarah Minkiewicz-Breunig's Excalibur, an Artist
Series horse produced a few years ago. What Joanie doesn't write is that
on the visit when Sarah came to visit, there were lots and lots of meals
and chocolate monkeys involved. One of Sarah's last meals on the trip was
at a restaurant called "The Beach House" in Solana Beach, where we ate on
the terrace overlooking a beautifully clear Pacific Ocean. We even saw the
"green flash"!

Joanie writes:
The Loki is a buckskin-going-grey that I painted. He is actually a lot lighter
in color than this. The Loki run was an “artist run” since Loki was sculpted
by Lesli Kathman and produced in a run of less than thirty custom pieces.
Unlike other artist runs, which were about twenty pieces, we decided to do
a few more on Loki because he was so fun to paint. So Lesli has a mold, and
has painted about half, and I did the other half. This Loki is MINE, don’t
touch!
Oftentimes (but not every time) the artist comes out and collaborates with
Joan about the piece, and also just gets some good ol' fashioned visiting
in. It was probably this visit to the factory when we took Lesli on a tour
of the backlands of San Diego. We stopped at our favorite place to get beef
jerky (teriyaki flavor!) and after accepting a small, token, polite amount,
Lesli said "When our beef looks like that, we throw it out" (in her charming
southern accent, of course).
